Brits spend more money a year on coffee than they do on their electricity bill, says a new study.

The poll of 2,000 people by an online espresso maker website found that we spend an average of £452.28 a year on coffee whilst some heavy drinkers are splashing out over £2,000.

The huge amounts of cash being spent on the beverage are largely driven by high street coffee houses, who charge an average of £1.92 for a mug.

However, the poll reveals that around six out of ten coffee lovers are choosing to save cash by utilising bean to cup coffee machines at home.

Mark Taylor, a spokesperson for the company who issued the poll, was keen to point out the financial benefits of owning a coffee machine.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, he said: “The amount the average person is forking out each year on high street coffee is as much as your average yearly electricity bill or annual gym membership.

“When you calculate how much we’re all spending on buying coffee each week, the bill is shocking and I think people will be surprised to discover quite how quickly the expense adds up.”

The Daily Express reveal that mean are third more likely to buy a coffee than women and that those based in the West Midlands but more coffee than any other region.
