Digestive biscuits have been voted Britain’s top dunker when it comes to our favourite hot drinks accompaniment.

The Mail Online reports that digestives accounts for one in nine biscuits sold out of the 141 million packets of biscuits that were consumed last year.

It seems that when it comes to our perfect drinking snack, Britain has a sweet tooth. American-style cookies took second place in the poll of the nation’s favourite biscuits; followed by jam rings, chocolate fingers and the ubiquitous rich tea.

Global Daily Business additionally reports that Briton’s biscuit choices are somewhat influenced by the publications that they read. Daily Mail readers were found to be avid fans of the Garibaldis, while Guardian readers prefer their ginger biscuits and chocolate cookies.

Either way, the numbers revealed in the Nectar Card poll by Sainsbury’s mean that 22,596 biscuits are consumed by Brits every single hour. The poll chose not to reveal whether the results were limited to tea drinkers or latte machine addicts.

Commenting on the unrivalled success of the biscuit, Andre Erasmus, editor of Biscuit World, said: “Well done the biscuit.

“This little round entity is a strong cultural identity of Britain, and has been around since the 1600s. The digestive biscuit and the rich tea are both considered as a traditional accompaniment to a cuppa, so it’s no surprise to see them in the top five favourites.”

Although he admitted: “The jam ring in third spot was more of a surprise to us.”
