Macmillan Cancer Support’s coffee mornings raised a record amount in 2011, civilsociety.co.uk reports.

The cancer support charity raises money every year by encouraging people to fire up their espresso coffee machines and hold a get together with friends or colleagues. Proceeds from drink and cake sales are then donated to the charity.

2011 saw the 20th anniversary of its annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning campaign and proved to be the most successful yet. In total, volunteers raised over £10 million - a £2 million increase on the previous figure.

The main event, which took place on September 30th 2010, also saw the number of volunteers signing up rise to 51,000; an increase of 16 per cent on previous figures.

Amongst those who raised money for the charity were pensioners from Hadrian Lodge in South Shields, who tried their hands at being baristas; as well as treating visitors to a slice of cake.

Speaking to jarrowandhebburngazette.com once the money had been counted, scheme manager Jayne Riley enthused: “It was a lovely day and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

“As well as refreshments, we had cake stalls and a tombola with everything raised going towards MacMillan. So far, with monies we raised over Christmas, we have £300 and cash is still coming in. The residents have done really well to raise the amount we have.”
