A new brand of cup lid which alters the taste of hot beverages is becoming a hit with coffee lovers.
Geeky-gadgets.com report that The Aroma Coffee Lid is glazed with a layer of fragrant material which influences the smell and therefore the taste of beverages once it is heated.
The lid is available to buy from a number of retailers and has been adapted by a number of coffee shops, although it is thought that the product may encourage greater use of bean to cup coffee machines around the home.
Speaking to gizmag.com, Marc Miller from the lid’s creators Mint Urban Technologies explained why the smell of warm beverages were so important to how they tasted.
He said: “Coffee consists of 800 distinct flavours and not unlike fine wine, has a ‘nose’ or ‘bouquet’. Certain notes are more prized than others and the Aroma Lid only uses these finer notes to enhance the taste.
“Coffee lids block the aroma coming from the coffee. Because taste is 95 per cent smell, the lids are stopping us from experiencing the full taste of our favourite morning brew.”
Considering that 100 billion coffee lids a year are being produced worldwide, it would appear that the Aroma Lid has the potential to become very successful.
